The Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) passed by the Howard Liberal government has now been replaced by the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth), passed by the Rudd Labor government. The key changes to the Workplace Relations Act are the introduction of and emphasis on National Employment Standards (10 minimum conditions for employment) and Modern Awards (setting out the minimum rate of pay for employees and also standards for employment).
